Frederick Doren Stone, 79, of Kurtistown died May 29. Born in Freetown, N.Y., he taught environmental science at the University of Hawaii and was director of the Forest Tropical Ecosystem and Agriculture Management program at Hawaii Community College until his retirement, published numerous articles about the evolutionary biology of cave-adapted insects, worked on biodiversity conservation and provided expert testimony for projects affecting biodiversity, including the contested case regarding industrial development impacting Mauna Kea’s vulnerable biologic ecosystems.
